Healthy Village Environments Program

Rural Alaska communities face many unique environmental challenges. Limited financial resources and logistics often make it difficult to adequately address local problems relating to solid and hazardous wastes, air quality, water quality, resource conservation and other emerging threats such as climate change. These issues can pose significant risk and can diminish the quality of the environment, subsistence resources and ultimately human health.

Although there are many hurdles to overcome, solutions are attainable through local initiative and innovation. It is the goal of Healthy Village Environments (HVE) program to support local projects that can help make communities safe, healthy and sustainable. HVE develops partnerships with tribal organizations and provides technical support and funding through EPA Community Environmental Demonstration Project grants. Through these partnerships we help Alaska Native communities to develop appropriate and effective approaches that can have benefits across the State.

With this goal in mind, HVE and Rural Alaska Community Action Program (RurAL CAP)  provide one year Environmental Demonstration Grants to communities that desire to take on a project that will improve environments. Together, we award approximately 10-12 grants annually that range from $5,000.00 to $30,000.00 with funding provided by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
