The Food Distribution Program is a federal food program that is an alternative to food stamps for low-income American Indian/Alaska Native and non-Native households residing on a reservation or Alaska Native Tribal Village, or households living in approved near areas that contain at least one member of a federally recognized tribe. Eligible households are certified based upon income and resource standards set by the federal government and must be re-certified at least every 12 months. The Food Distribution Program is provided by a service grant from the United States Department of Agriculture Food Nutrition Service.
The federal tribal agencies that currently administer this program in their community are: Akiak, Alakanuk, Aleknagik, Anaktuvuk Pass, Atmautlauk, Buckland, Chitina, Deering, Hydaburg, Kiana, King Cove, Kobuck, Kotzebue, Metlakatla, Old Harbor, Seldovia, Stebbins, and St. Michael.
