FOCUS ON SAFETY Curriculum
Unintentional injuries kill more school age children than any other cause.
  • Injuries account for more than half of deaths among school age children.
  • About 18 Alaskan children (ages 5 to 15 years) die each year due to an unintentional injury, such as a motor-vehicle crash, drowning, or ATV crash.
  • Alaskan children are TWICE as likely as all US children to die of an unintentional injury as all US children.
  • Alaska Native children are FIVE times as likely to die of an unintentional injury as all US children.
  • Almost all unintentional injury deaths are preventable.

Safety Curriculum Developed by, for and about Alaskans

The Alaska FOCUS on Safety Curriculum is an education standards-based injury prevention curriculum. It was developed for Alaskans in rural and remote villages of Alaska. The curriculum covers topics such as fire safety, coldwater/ice/hypothermia prevention, ATV/snowmachine safety, falls prevention, firearms/hunter safety, poison prevention, and pedestrian safety.  It has specific lessons for grades kindergarten through eight, and can and has been adapted for high school students.

The research for this curriculum was based on statistics from Alaska State Trauma Registry data. Alaska artist, Diane Barske, designed the posters, which show rural Alaska Native people taking suitable safety steps. Alaska Native Helen Stafford, wrote the safety stories that bring adventure to life as they introduce each section of the safety units.
