Injury Prevention Training in Alaska (course descriptions)

The ANTHC Injury Prevention program coordinates several different types of injury prevention training for professionals and community members working to reduce injuries among Alaska Native people. These include:

  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
  • Digital Storytelling
  • Indian Health Services Injury Prevention Training

ASIST

The ASIST workshop is for caregivers who want to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide in someone with suicidal thoughts.  Suicide can be prevented with the help of prepared caregivers.  Just as "CPR" skills make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills used in suicide first aid. ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize risk and learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. More details are available on our Suicide Prevention webpage.

The workshop is for all caregivers (any person in a position of trust). This includes professionals, paraprofessionals and lay people. It is suitable for mental health professionals, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, teachers, counselors, youth workers, police and correctional staff, school support staff, clergy, and community volunteers.

Injury Prevention Digital Storytelling

This 3-day workshop brings together groups of 10-12 people together for a three-day hands-on production workshop in which trained facilitators introduce participants to the skills needed to create a 3-5 minute first person narrative. Participants write a 250-word script and share it in a “story circle”.  The students then develop a storyboard, record audio narration, scan and download images, and edit their presentation using video and audio editing software.  The stories developed focus on how injuries or violence have impacted the person’s life and what can be done to prevent them in the future.

Indian Health Services Injury Prevention Training

Three levels of training are offered (see below). Each of these courses consists of mini lectures, skill-building exercises, and small and large group discussions. There are no fees for these courses or course materials. The Indian Health Service (IHS) Injury Prevention program endorses each of these courses.

Level 1: Introduction to Injury Prevention, "The Public Health Approach"

Introduction to Injury Prevention is a 3.5-day course that introduces participants to the core components of the public health approach to injury prevention. The purpose of this course is to increase the participant's knowledge and skills about how to use the public health approach to prevent injuries in the community setting. This course is a prerequisite for the IHS Injury Prevention Fellowship program. Prerequisite: none.

Level 1 agenda

Level 2: Intermediate Injury Prevention, "The Role of Data"

The Intermediate Injury Prevention course is the second in a series of three short courses developed by IHS. This course will expand upon the knowledge and skills gained in the Introduction to Injury Prevention course. The purpose of this course is to increase the participant's knowledge and skills about how to effectively collect and use data in injury prevention. This course is a prerequisite for the IHS Injury Prevention Fellowship program. Prerequisite: Introduction to Injury Prevention.

Level 2 agenda

Level 3: Advanced Injury Prevention, "Program Management"

This course builds upon the knowledge and skills developed in the introductory and intermediate courses by focusing on how to effectively manage a program to prevent injuries among American Indians and Alaska Natives. Prerequisites: Intermediate Injury Prevention.

Level 3 agenda

The Injury Prevention Program has instructed courses on injury prevention for the Community Health Aid Program, as well as coordinating training sessions for Social Marketing and Advocacy, Alaska Water Wise Instructor course, EpiInfo, Injury Surveillance, Grant Writing, and Program Evaluation.
