The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) Tobacco Prevention and Control program provides support to the Alaska Tribal Health System in the development, implementation, and evaluation of effective ways to reduce the prevalence of tobacco use in health care center patient populations.
Regional programs ANTHC has provided technical assistance to include Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation, Tanana Chiefs Conference, Kenaitze Indian Tribe, Kodiak Area Native Association, Maniilaq Association, Southcentral Foundation, South East Alaska Regional Consortium, Ketchikan Indian Community, Eastern Aleutian Tribes, Alaska Island Community Services and Bartlett Regional Hospital.
Many of our services are provided through a tobacco technical assistance contract from the State of Alaska. For more information about available support, please contact the ANTHC Tobacco Prevention and Control Program.
Within these programs implementation of a tobacco dependence treatment system can vary. The following steps have been used in successful nicotine dependence treatment programs in the past:
- Add screening tools for tobacco use to all clinical forms
- Train providers in motivational interviewing techniques and have them document tobacco use by their patients at every visit
- Develop a process for providers to refer patients to a Nicotine Dependence Treatment Program within their clinic or to the Alaska Tobacco Quit Line
- Develop protocol and implement pharmacotherapy into pharmacy formulary
- Document information necessary for coding and billing of tobacco dependence services in patient record
