ANTHC Tobacco Prevention and Control Program

About Us

In September 2003, the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) established the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program to provide assistance in the development of capacity and infrastructure needed for comprehensive tobacco control programs in the state of Alaska and for Alaska Natives.

Specifically, the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program provides assistance to health care centers in the Alaska Tribal Health System to develop, expand, and/or revitalize nicotine dependence treatment services.  Program development is based on the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) guidelines which outline a systematic approach to treating tobacco use in the healthcare setting.

ANTHC Tobacco program staff established a successful nicotine dependence treatment program in 2001 at the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Center in Bethel, Alaska, and currently maintains a treatment program in Anchorage for ANTHC employees, patients, and visitors of the Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC).

By increasing access to nicotine dependence treatment services and building capacity for comprehensive tobacco control, ANTHC can assist its owner/beneficiaries to quit using tobacco and improve their health and the health of their families.
