ANMC Adult Hepatitis Vaccine Use

  1. Hepatitis A vaccine for adults (age 19 & older) will be available only in the Hepatitis RN vaccine clinic (Friday afternoons Internal Medicine). As standard practice hepatitis A vaccine will not be provided for non-beneficiaries, employees or volunteers.
  2. Hepatitis B vaccination (adult, age 20 & older) is required for employees, but vaccine will not be provided for non-beneficiaries, contract employees or volunteers.
  3. Mandatory screening and results prior to vaccinating.
  4. The following is the priority for persons receiving hepatitis vaccine.

- individuals with a chronic liver disease  (including Hepatitis B and C carriers),
- men who have sex with men,
- persons who use street drugs or
- persons who receive clotting factor

¨ ¨ Persons who travel to endemic countries and hospital workers in clinical areas at risk for exposure to contaminated materials are known to benefit from vaccine protection. These indications are not currently covered by the ANMC Adult Vaccine protocol.

Ways to find out a patient's hepatitis status: Ask

If a patient thinks the hepatitis B series was started or that they had hepatitis B, get documentation by looking in:

  1. Health Summary; check Active/Inactive Problem List, Immunizations or Labs

Look for these designations or labs:

Hep B Carrier
Immune
anti-HBc/HBc antibody positive or reactive
anti-HBs/HBs antibody positive or reactive
Core positive
  1. Immunization records (patient's own yellow immunization card).
  2. Records from previous providers, by FAX or telephone: Immunization office, Service Unit PHN, village or clinic.
