Injury Facts

  • Injuries are the leading cause of death for all Alaska Natives when unintentional and intentional injuries are combined.
  • One out of every four Alaska Native deaths in Alaska is caused by injury.
  • Unintentional injuries alone are the fourth leading cause of death overall.  
  • Per capita, Alaska Natives die from unintentional injuries twice as often as all American Indian and Alaska Natives, and nearly three times as often as all Americans.
  • The leading cause of injury death among Alaska Natives is suicide. Each year an average of 44 Alaska Natives die from suicide - one suicide every eight days. Alaska Natives are more than three times as likely to commit suicide than the U.S. all races population.
  • Injuries disproportionately affect young people. 52% of deaths among Alaska Native children aged 1-19 are caused by injury.
