Solid Waste Management
As part of the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) interagency agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Indian Health Service (IHS), solid waste management in rural Alaska is addressed in several ways. One of those methods is by providing mini grants to tribes, through a competitive process, to develop Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) Plans. These tribes become sub-recipients of the larger grant and communicate directly with ANTHC program staff for technical assistance, guidance, and training.
Project goals
-
Improve environmental management and build tribal capacity within Alaska Native villages by continuing to provide tribal grant awards for local, site-specific waste stream management activities that improve or enhance waste practices in rural communities.
-
Provide a statewide tribal technical assistance and advocacy program that empowers and assists tribes with village-based decision-making, policy development, and community planning related to waste management.
-
Provide a statewide forum for Alaska Natives to come together to address solid waste and other environmental issues facing tribes in rural Alaska.
