Multi-Facility Integration (MFI)

What is MFI?

MFI (Multi-facility Integration) is a computer system designed to allow the confidential transmission and integration of information among Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS).  Utilizing standard RPMS software, MFI runs in the background, normally overnight, enabling patient data to be shared between multiple RPMS sites common to the patient.

For example, imagine the following;

  1. A patient moves from a village to Fairbanks.
  2. The patient has also received treatment at Alaska Native Medical Center (ANMC) in Anchorage.
  3. After initially visiting their new clinic at Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center in Fairbanks, past details of earlier visits to other facilities will automatically be forwarded to the clinic’s RPMS database by MFI.

Thus the patient’s new health practitioner will have access to the patient’s previous medical background history.

This history will include past visits, including direct outpatient and clinic visits, hospitalization data, lab tests, immunizations and medications, enabling for quality health care for Alaska Natives.

MFI stores the data within its own RPMS area, providing a centralized database which can be utilized for both reporting and research.

Although MFI is part of the Indian Health Service (IHS) RPMS system, MFI is only available in Alaska.

There are over 100 MFI sites now in existence with over 900,000 encounters alone sent each year.  On average each encounter will be sent to three or four different sites.
