During the summer of 2021, the residential area of Stebbins, in northwest Alaska, saw homes throughout the community installed with 10 Mini Portable Alternative Sanitation Systems (PASS).  Watch the following video about the installation of this important new system and the significance of clean water in rural Alaska. Approximately 3,300 homes in over 30 communities in rural Alaska lack in-home piped water, leading to low in-home water use. Community facilities, such as washeterias, help bridge gaps in household water access where piped water may not be immediately accessible. When Chevak joined the Alaska Rural Utility Collaborative (ARUC) in 2004, the program was in its infancy. Chevak, and a handful of other communities in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region, recognized the advantages of working together to manage, operate and maintain their water and sewer systems.
