ANTHC RN Sarah Mattie honored as a Go Red for Women ambassador during American Heart Month

February 1, 2024

Sarah Mattie, ANTHC RN, has been named as a 2024 Go Red for Women ambassador! She is one of eight Alaska women to be chosen as an ambassador.

“As a heart failure survivor and congenital heart disease carrier, the Go Red for Women campaign is so important to me because it serves to educate women on the signs and symptoms and how to advocate for the proper treatment and care,” Mattie said. “It took nearly a year after my first symptoms to obtain a diagnosis. I feel that if I would have known more about what to look for, I could have had a diagnosis sooner.”

For the last two decades, the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women has raised awareness of cardiovascular disease—the leading cause death for women in the United States. The Go Red initiative serves as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally. Go Red ambassadors are advocates and survivors, who highlight the ways cardiovascular disease can impact women of all backgrounds and life stages.

“I am honored to be a Go Red ambassador. More women than we realize are living with cardiovascular diseases,” Mattie said. “To be able to educate women in Alaska about the signs and symptoms of cardiovascular diseases, heart attack and strokes is a charge I take seriously.”

February is recognized as American Heart Month. Community members across the U.S. are encouraged to wear red on Friday, Feb. 2 for National Wear Red Day.

In addition to taking part in National Wear Red Day, Mattie encourages everyone to learn CPR during February, so we are all prepared to help save a life.
